Giles Deacon x DFS Foundation Design Bursary

British fashion designer Giles Deacon has collaborated with British sofa manufacturer and retailer DFS to launch a limited edition sofa, the ‘Lipgloss.’

Giles has also teamed up with DFS to launch the DFS Design Foundation, a programme specifically targeted at final-year undergraduate design students looking to kick-start their design careers.  The overall winner will benefit from a tailored package of support worth in excess of £20,000 which will include: a cash bursary and a paid three month internship, which will include the opportunity to work with Giles at his London studio and with DFS’ expert in-house design team.

The DFS Design Foundation initiative, which opens for entries this autumn, gives young designers the opportunity to test their talents on a real life commercial brief.  The programme is specifically targeted at final-year undergraduate design students looking to kick-start their design careers.

Speaking about the launch of the DFS Design Foundation, Giles commented: “When DFS approached me about working with them on the project; I was incredibly impressed by their passion and commitment to British design. I was well aware of DFS’ long heritage here in the UK, but I didn’t realise just how deep their British design roots go.

“The DFS team was clear from the start about their motives for launching the DFS Design Foundation. Their business has been built off the back of a long term investment in British design and craftsmanship and it was obvious to me that we had a shared passion for supporting young design talent.”

He continued, “This is not about finding the next Giles Deacon, it’s about giving young designers the opportunity to showcase their talent and build their career whatever their design background. Young designers will be set the challenge of applying their design skills to a commercial design brief. They’ll need to respond both creatively and practically and along the way they’ll benefit from professional guidance and advice.”

An expert team of judges, including designers from DFS’ design and development team, representatives from the British Fashion Council alongside Giles Deacon will review the entries and shortlist 10 young designers who will attend an intensive residential programme where they will get the chance to refine and finesse their design and attend a series of design master classes.

The overall winner will then benefit from a tailored package of support worth in excess of £20,000 which will include: a cash bursary as well as a paid three month internship, which will include the opportunity to work side by side with Giles at his London studio, as well as the opportunity to spend time working with DFS’ expert in-house design team.

Ian Filby, Chief Executive of DFS, commented: “Each year we will be partnering with a professional designer who has excelled in their chosen design field. This year we are delighted to be working with Giles Deacon to give young designers the opportunity to learn new skills, showcase their talent and build their careers.

“For us, this is a fantastic opportunity to build on our long-term investment in British design and continue to play our part in helping the next generation come through. For over 44 years we’ve been designing and manufacturing sofas here in the UK and our design team has continued to grow as we’ve grown. We believe it is absolutely right that a successful business like ours should invest in the next generation.”
